I get a lot of crackling audio when using my rift with an active usb3 extension. I have ordered the 4 port Startech card to see if the problem is with my usb ports.
Lol interesting, it ssems i had been having problems for some time then due to my extension. I was getting crackling but put it down to ropy software.
I rebalanced my usb at the same time i got 1.12 and it fixed the issue, i think, i put it down to 1.12 but maybe not
Fiat Coupe, gone. 350Z gone. Dirty nappies, no sleep & practical transport incoming. Thank goodness for VR
Is it possible that the issue is the Rift's cable itself? In my house, we have two Rifts on nearly identical computers. One works fine with the recommended 10ft HDMI extension cable, but the other does not. After having swapped video cards, cables, etc. it is clear that one Rift is not like the other. One accepts the HDMI extension and works great; the other does not.
Tamazon is my wife IRL - so I am adding new information to her post here...
After some research, it was the Rift's cable. I took her Rift and hooked it up to my computer which has a 10ft HDMI and 10ft USB3 extension. On my computer, her rift got sound and a black screen. I then took the Rift cable off of my Rift and attached it to hers (still going through the 10ft HDMI and 10ft USB3) and her Rift worked perfectly. The only difference was using my Rift cable versus hers.
Since I have ruled out everything but the cable, should I ask/expect Support to replace the cable - or just buy a new one? They are apparently purchasable for $49? https://www.oculus.com/accessories/
Okay, so it was the Rift cable. The one that came with Tamazon's Rift was apparently defective. When I replaced with the new cable, she was able to use her Rift with the 10ft HDMI and 10ft USB3 extension. Yeah! So, if you are experiencing a black screen when using an extension cable, it might be:
1. The HDMI extension cable. I think this is the most likely cause as I have seen quite a few HDMI extension cables that will not make a tight/secure connection either to the graphics card or the Rift's HDMI cable. 2. The Rift's HDMI cord. I am guessing this is less likely, but it was what impacted Tamazon's setup. 3. Both. 4. Something else that did not affect us.
If you experience a black screen, I would start troubleshooting by replacing the HDMI extension cable since those only cost around $10-$15. If that does not fix the problem, try replacing the Rift's cable.
If you experience a "flashing" black screen, I would also start troubleshooting by replacing the HDMI extension cable. This seems to occur if the HDMI extension cable has too much wiggle either at the video card end or the Rift end.
Good luck!
I would have preferred to not have to pay $49 to get her Rift working (since this has been an issue for Tamazon's Rift since day 1), but having it fixed is worth it.
@andrewtek - Assuming your Rift was purchased through Oculus (or a licensed affiliate) and the warranty was still valid, support maybe would have been willing to hook you up with that replacement cable for free. They hooked me up with a free replacement oculus remote, once. Didn't even ask me to send in the one that had stopped working.
But I can understand if you / your partner were eager to get that Rift operational again ASAP, and didn't want to wait.
The next nerd to cry about "the resolution" of top-of-the-line VR devices will be permanently banned from using ALL standard-definition media. And yes, that includes all pre-Switch Nintendo games. Especially Melee.
perhaps they dont know...bc the oculus was built by aliens and our comms haven't reached their galaxy yet. Perhaps if we sacrifice a small child they will hear us?
Anyone had any luck with this recently, i'd kind of given up but want to still pursue it as I'm fed up with being tethered by the cable and it not letting me move around freely, ruins the immersion
I've tried a few cables and always had the same issue, hdmi extender giving me a black screen and the usb extender giving me crackly sound and I know it's probably down to my onboard usb ports not having enough power to support it, so I figured maybe I should give this a try for the usb extender
Mighe be being daft here but I thought if I plug one male to male cable from my pc to this box and leave that at the back of my pc and then buy a separate male to female hdmi extension cable to connect to the output of this box and then plug my rift into that as don't wanna really just plug my rift into this box and then be dragging the box around
Might be quite costly tho, might be cheaper to go with the replacement rift cable as @andrewtek suggested but if that doesn't work, would mean sending it back to oculus where as I can just fire these straight back to amazon like I did with last ones
Don't wanna really start buying new internal components for my pc but might give this a go!
I was a believer!! I was a Kickstarter backer!! Now I shall reap the rewards!!!
I have Gigabyte G1 980Ti... The only thing that work for me is HTC VIVE LINK BOX. I've tried 5 different HDMI cables (none of them worked on my PC) with my friends computer with gtx 1080 and 1080Ti, so my conclusion is that my GPU have issue with extension cables and OCULUS CV1... dunno why. Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth...?
I've finally got mine running perfectly now, I only really needed an extra 3 metres of cable to be able to freely move around and this has seriously brought a whole new level to playing games, no longer feel like I'm limited to not move around as much as I would like too and barely feels like the cable is there
Don't know if this was vital to the setup but I needed extra usb ports anyway so I got one of these with the power adaptor just in case I needed more power
I tried a CSL active repeater usb 3.0 extension cable but still had the crackly sound and the audio seemed to shift from left to right randomly so wondered if the fact that it was an active repeater cable that was actually causing this
So I just got a standard 2 metre usb extension cable as I already had about a metre with the usb hub and this has worked great, no sound issues at all now so not sure how it would work with more than 2 metres
To fix the issue with the black screen with the hdmi extension cable, seen a few people on amazon were using these or similar ones to sort out this issue
These need to be connected straight to the rift or won't work otherwise and then you don't even need a hdmi extension cable, you can just use a standard hdmi cable like the one below straight into the box and to your pc and they are really small and lightweight so don't add extra weight
I bought two cables, they didn't work, and jumped straight to using the Vive Link Box+ cables. It works great. Wasn't gonna gamble any more. No reason to believe one cable will work while another doesn't when it's definitely power related.
I just received a HDMI and a USB3A cable from cable matters, each 10 feet long and it works great. I have a gtx 1070 card from MSI and no issues yet. The cables have been descibed earlier in this thread. It's a '2 pack High speed HDMI Extension cable with Eathernet 10 Feet - 3D and 4K Resolution ready' and a 'Superspeed USB 3.0 Type A Male to Female Cable 10 Feet'
6 foot extensions works for most people. If you want to go for 10 foot cables the success rate is lower and appears to be primarily related to the manufacturer of your video card.
I had success with 10 ft cables above with my EVGA 980Ti.

The problem with the 10 feet hdmi extension cable is that not all hdmi output from your video card will work. I do not know why it happens.
I have a sapphire RX 570 NITRO. It has two hdmi outputs. When I tested the second one, it just worked.
For those of you who have already bought 10 feet hdmi cable, try different output to see if that works.
