AMD Ryzen 7 1700X 8-core reported as not within reccomended specs.

I do believe we need a new patch for CPU-types.

My brand new AMD Ryzen 7 1700X 8core is well above any reccomended, yet Home warns me that it isn't.
Not a big problem, but not true.

I believe they are currently testing the Ryzen chips, the 1800x is cleared so the 1700x/1700 shouldn't be too far behind.

My 1800X also said this, until they recently added it to the Compatibility list. Apparently they go through and test them individually, to make sure there are no specific problems. I'd give them another week or so to get it squared away. In the mean time, you can temporarily fix the Warning by opening this file in a text editor;
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Oculus\Compatibility.json
Then search for '1800X', you'll find AMD Ryzen 7 1800X. Just change it to AMD Ryzen 7 1700X and then Restart Oculus. I think this fix should last until they update Compatibility again, which shouldn't be a problem because that update will probably just add it anyway.

The way the compatiblity test works is by checking against a list of known approved hardware. In this case, the R7 1800X was tested and confirmed to be working, but others in the line haven't been tested yet. Rest assured we will continue testing and, assuming everything works, they will be added to the list as well.

There is also a long thread about Ryzen here with some additional discussion.

My worse ever cpu was the fx9370 a pig of a chip that needed a small nuclear reactor to run and another to cool the damn thing. I7-6700K now.

Yeah, the FX chips were pretty bad. Ryzen is much better than that but still maybe not topping Intel (at least in pure gaming benchmarks). I have a couple issues I'm still working out on my Ryzen build and I'm hoping upcoming BIOS updates or other patches can smooth things out. Depending on what you do, there are some advantages, especially in heavy multi-thread tasks. So video editing, streaming, 3d rendering, game development, etc. would probably see some nice boost. So there are pros and cons.

I had an 8350 until about one month ago when I got a Ryzen 1700, and the thing ran flawlessly anything I threw at it, VR or not.
What did you find so terrible about it?

And yeah, the Ryzens are giving Intel a run for their money, competing with Intel-equivalent parts that cost about 3 times more.
