Oculus Rift Coming to Chuck E. Cheese's

Postby lgv212 » Tue May 20, 2014 6:31 am

"Kids today have unprecedented access to game consoles and tablets," said Roger Cardinale, president of CEC Entertainment. "Our challenge is to deliver an experience not available at home, and there is no doubt virtual reality does just that. Oculus Rift technology is the next frontier in the gaming industry, and we're thrilled to be able to say it's part of the Chuck E. Cheese's lineup."

Any thoughts? No doubt that it's a sign that it is becoming much more mainstream, but for pizza-fueled children's birthday parties? It seems they'll be using DK1 for this.

DK1 is well suited for simpler graphics due the low res (kid stuff, Minecraft...).

I'm also surprised they'll let kids get their hands on what is effectively prototype hardware. It's built well enough, except the screen adjustment is flimsy, and the lenses seem to be a bit too loose for large scale public consumption.

Otherwise, it's all good. The more VR the better.

I dont think dev kits are authorized to be used commercially. Oculus said this themselves.
Well maybe it's just jealousy
Mixing up with a violent mind
A circumstance that doesn't make much sense
Or maybe I'm just dumb

Yes, we've been telling people to wait for the consumer version to use the Rift commercially.

While interesting... I definitely worry about kids full of pizza and susceptible to motion sickness...

Now has this been more of a suggestion from Oculus, or could this bring the CEC company any trouble?

Well I'm definitely going to be the creepy older guy at Chuck E. Cheese now, they've got locations all over where I live. Are we sure they're using the DK1? This might just be a press release and we won't actually see any of this until the DK2 is released.

It's more of a suggestion than anything. We are aware of people doing this in the past and I don't think we've pursued it. It's mostly a matter of us not wanting the general public getting a bad impression of our product based on a Development Kit that was not intended for consumers.

When speaking with individuals at OVR last year there was no interest in Out-of-Home issues - even when I mentioned the issue of "protection of brand"! Now that the "horse is right out of the stable", is there not a risk to keep on going on without a 'basic policy' in place about public space utilization?

You are kind of setting yourself up for some serious bad publicity as people peddle their claimed "entertainment" systems using whatever DK1 they get off eBay?

Post FB - any chance of s dedicated plan regarding digital out-of-home application? Send me a PM!

What the experience looks like... with a different pair of goggles being worn!

"Chuck E. Cheese operates a kid-friendly themed restaurants catering to families with children between 2-9 years old. While the company defines its age group up to age 12..."
[Taken from CEC corporate announcement 2013]

"...children under 6-years of age should not use the Oculus Rift development kit... as their eyes are still in development... pretty close together...putting them in a Rift is not a good idea...don't want to ruin how their stereo perception evolves..."
[Taken for GDC'13 Palmer Luckey presentation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CRdRc8CcGY&feature=youtu.be&t=13m45s]

At present our questions to CEC on age discrimination and notices on the "Virtual Ticket Blaster" are being replied too and will go into a feature we are writing on the subject. But from a personal perspective - I think that if the game is under 2mins they may get away with a "novel" approach argument - where as the serious concern on exposure was long duration usage. Why the cinema industry has never been hauled over the coals regarding 3D films and "movie headaches" reports for under 9-year-olds.
