Hello guys! I'm happy to announce release of the fRuits of my and Louis Arrigoni's work of the last two weeks or so - SightLine: The Chair!

SightLine: The Chair, is a surreal experience designed as a demoing tool. Crafted to throw users into the world of VR, and show off it's full potential both in creating variety of worlds that feel real and creating realities that behave unlike anything you might know.

This experience is based off the gaze-direction mechanics of the award winning prototype "SightLine", originally developed for the 2013 VR Jam sponsored by Oculus VR and IndieCade.

However I designed it to be ideal first-time experience for demoing the Rift: No controls, no explaining, just put the Rift on and look around :)

IMPORTANT REGARDING VIRUS WARNING: Unfortunately Chrome started flagging the SightLine: The Chair downloads as malicious, which is a false positive. I've tested all the binary files (separately, via mass upload) with Virus Total and they came out clean.

Further testing has shown that this is triggered by simple presence of .bat or .exe files within the ZIP, even if the files contain absolutely no data, and couldn't therefore be malicious. Try following two files to check for yourself:

http://evrydayvr.srv.sn/share/sightline/TestExe.zip
http://evrydayvr.srv.sn/share/sightline/TestBat.zip

Additionaly Google Safe Browsing reports both domains as safe and that they haven't hosted any malware within past 90 days:
http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=www.evrydayvr.srv.sn
http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=www.sightlinevr.com

This problem looks like Chrome issue/bug and I've already reported it, but until solution is available you'll have to manually override the file.

Feel free to scan the files with your AV software just to be sure.

Amazing experience. It felt like being in a dream. Literally. And it shows how much better the DK2 induces the feeling of presence. Great work, guys!

Best Tech demo for the DK2 so far.

This should be shown when you want to promote the Oculus Rift and VR.

Amazing job, can't wait for more!

3dvrmonster: Thanks, don't forget so share what you think! :)

thatinkjar: Thanks!

Darius: Thank you! Dream-like experience is one of the goals, so I'm happy that it's fullfilled. Did you get any judder if you don't mind me asking?

kingrocket: Thanks a lot! Promoting Oculus Rift and showing off the potential of VR was the key idea behind this demo, so I'll be really happy if it serves that purpose well :)

nedo: Than you! Yeah, you can press "C" to reset your position.

I'm getting bad performance and judder. Do any of you have AMD Radeon cards? Mine is R9-290X.

A lot of people seem to get judder (when I posted to r/Oculus) even with nVidia cards, despite maintaining 75 Hz.

How is your FPS? I'm working on some optimizations and I'll tweak the quality settings in the Unity, the SDK 0.4.0 seems to override them, so there's probably 8x multisampling always on.

I don't have any AMD cards myself sadly.

Didn't have any judder whatsoever even though I've got a somewhat old GTX 660 TI.

Just amazing. This is now at the top of my demo list.

Unfortunately, I get bad performance during the tree and gras scene (R9-270X). The rest is perfectly smooth. Also, maybe you might want to replace a few textures with higher resolution ones. The street and the earth stood out quite bad.

And finally, a really minor point: It took me a while to figure out, that the menu is controlled by W/S and Space - you should add mappings for the arrow keys and gamepads as well (or did I just hit a bug?). Or, as you obviously like to play with the line of sight, add a fancy look-at-item-and-tap-at-the-side-of-the-rift-control.

But as said above, this is already at the top of my demo list and will be used to initiate some of my family members tomorrow! Thanks a lot!

A few observations about the stuttering, that I experience:

1.) There is a short stop whenever an object changes. I did not notice this at first, but I get this in every scene from every object - even the tiny pencil at the desk does this.

Are new objects loaded each time? I have an HDD, not a SSD, maybe this is why I notice it and others don't? Can you prefatch the objects.

2.) When the gras appears, but there are no trees yet, I get extreme stuttering while looking down at the gras. When I continue and the trees and birds appear, the stuttering while looking down goes away. But instead I then get stuttering while looking up to the birds. I am not sure, if both problems are related - The only way, they might be is if all the birds and all the gras are replaced while turning your head...?

I have a lot stutter in the beginning and some other parts.
I wonder if this is going to be fixed by the Oculus devs or if that is just "part of the unity engine".

I'd love to show this demo to everybody as a first ...sight in VR. Because it's easily the best experience I've seen so far. Only if there wasn't all this unbearable stuttering..
After the desk into the next scene it gets perfectly smooth, only to have crazy stutter in the next ones again.

I'm getting only 55-65fps on the desk scene, the GPU (6970) is only running at 75%. When I enable crossfire I get even worse micro stutter or something but steady 75fps.
The CPU (i5 2500K OC 4x4,2Ghz) is extremely loaded on all 4 cores almost to the maximum...on a more or less static DESK SCENE. GTA4 has less load than that
When the desk light turns off, I'm getting instantly +20fps (70fps). On the second scene steady 75fps while the GPU is still loaded around 75-77% and CPU.
I also just noticed that leaving the Oculus Config open in the background sucks 25% CPU usage. But even when I closed it I still got stutter, a little bit less and a little better framerate.

I like and hate the unity engine at the same time

That was absolutely amazing!!! This is the best demonstration I have seen so far of the capabilities and future of VR! I had a lot of fun in this one, especially the space scene, when I turned around and looked at the void of space I was blown away. I have tried all the other demos, and this one was by far the most amazing experience I have had so far!

I have an amd fx8320 oc to 4.5 ghz and a 7950, 8gb 1333 ram, no stutter butter smooth!

Very impressive, this demo really does have a presence to it. And if it really did only take two weeks, well, all the more impressive.

Now wouldn't it be interesting if more video games changed their content on the fly like this? I suppose the biggest trouble is the physics at that point.

Another AMD card and more CPU power...this shows The Chair needs optimization badly.
I cannot understand how a simple desk scene doesn't run at 200fps and above (if it wasn't capped to 75). On UDK it surely would.
Developers of these demos should not underestimate the required raw graphics power. It makes a difference if someone owning a GTX780 creates a demo vs one owning only a 560Ti. The 560 guy will be more careful upon optimization because his system already is ""weak(er)"". And this of course enables more users to enjoy the demo.
While instead the GTX780 guy will throw just anything on the GPU and makes sure it runs on HIS system. Everyone else will require similar powerful systems.(and sometimes nvidia vs amd makes another difference)
I don't want to make changes on my system just to run these small demos yet. It does run Crysis3 and tons other games smoothly in Eyefinity.

Brilliant! I don't have my dk2 yet, but this will be the first i will try, i think this is the best DK2 Software you can try first, after the Calibration Desktop.
Great work and thank you for the FREE-Version!
I love how everything changed if you look away, also you can choose from 3 types, very nice!
I wish i had a unity pro license, to bad only dk1 user get one for free.
