Diorama no.1 : Blocked In V3.0 - UPDATE : 09/16/2015

Postby DanielErnst » October 28th, 2013, 2:13 pm

Heya everybody.

I finally got around to finishing a new iteration of Blocked In. It took some time, since I also had to get it Vive version ready. Other then that I have been hard at work on other dioramas and Dear Pigeon Man. Visit http://www.dearpigeonman.com for a sneakpeek :) or follow me on my FB page: http://www.facebook.com/shoeboxdiorama . Gear versions are also in the works.

But let's talk about Blocked In.
The update includes:
- Realtime Shadows in the handpainted environment (courtesy of Tim Moelard from The Virtual Dutchmen)
- Progression structure. A new view will unlock after you've spend 5 minutes in the first view. It's hard for visitors to relax for more then 5 minutes, this way I hope people will be motivated to stay in a view longer. But do tell me your thoughts.
- Menu navigation is more efficient.
- Fixed a lot of geometry problems, reworked a lot of textures.

Known issues:
- Some texture issues in the main menu miniatures.
- Popping transparant texture in the 3rd view.
- Shadows can be glitchy (Seems to be a Unity 5.2 issue)
- Options menu is taken out for now, will be put in later.
- No return to menu button yet.

You can download it from here:
http://www.theshoeboxdiorama.com/downlo ... 150916.zip

Note that this is not the "releasable" version so there probably will be some errors.
You can recenter the view by pressing any button and you'll need the 0.7.0 runtime drivers.
Please give your heartfelt feedback or if you are going to Oculus Connect find me there at the buffet table and tell me it personally!

Haha, that's amazing. I love the 80's vibe of the room you are in. Takes you back. I'll have to check this demo out when I get home.

Nicely done room - I am noticing a bit of view warping when you tilt your head to either side though

I'm in love with this demo! Straight to the top of my "demo to friends" list. No movement, just looking around a room with a LOT of detail. I didn't see a 1920x1080 option in the resolution dropdown so I went with 1280x800 to avoid aspect ratio problems/roll skewing, and 1280x800 actually looks fantastic in this demo!

Also, compared to the surroundings, seeing the stereoscopic cubes bouncing around inside that monitor on the shelf sure is trippy!

Thanks for sharing your work! :)

@ kelsoanim: Thanks dude :) That was exactly what I was aiming for. Although I do hope you did not have a view from your window with tetris blocks falling from the sky back in the eighties...

@ jayoh, MajorLag : Thanks :)!

@ Koshinator: Thanks! What resolution did you use?

@ drash: Glad you liked it! I spend a lot of time on the little details glad you noticed it :) I just uploaded a new version with 1920x1080 support hope it will improve the quality a little bit. PS I'm going to check out Titans of Space later today :) I finally got some spare time to check out some other cool Oculus demo's.

O man, that was amazing! I really felt I'm sitting in a real, physical room :) I love the art style, colors and all those beautiful little details. Music and sounds were awesome as well. Love that ticking clock, it was so calm and it gave the whole scene additional vintage feel. I was sitting there for quite some time, just enjoying the scene.
Can't wait to see more of your work!

This is awesome. The feeling of being in this room is so cool, yet so totally bizarre! lol. I have to ask though, will we have the possibility of being able to walk around the room? I keep wanting to do this! Thank you for this very cool experience :)

@ Little Guy:Thanks for the kind words :) an important part of the demo is that it feels like you are sitting behind a desk. It especially works well if you are sitting behind your real life desk. Your mind will make a subconscious link between real life and the virtual desk and room. Walking around will break that illusion of sitting in the room. And with some tests I did I got motion sickness quite fast due to the details in the scene. Maybe i'll add a spectator mode later on :)

@ Aastroem: Great, thanks!

@ Drash: Have fun!

@ Vroom: Thanks!!! Glad you felt it :) makes the hard work worth it! I got some smaller tests in the works as we speak. The bigger project will probably take some time to get done though :)

The room alone looks really well done, Everything is very detailed and pops really well. The tetris blocks falling out side and the tetris music playing is very neat. Thanks for sharing, Can't wait to see more from you. :)

Awesome! It's like there is this illusive "magic recipe" for creating an environment for the Rift that's not quite clear to anyone yet. Some hit it spot on, and some (most) don't. This one is great.

Would You mind terribly making a Linux build, too? I think this'll be one of my demonstration-demos for visitors, and I'd very much like not to have to reboot to Windows each time.

Wow this is amazing!

It helps that I'm sitting in a stool just like the desk in the game.

so much attention to detail!

This video review is great. It really captures what VR, and this demo in particular, are all about. It's amazing that you can get so much enjoyment by simply sitting in an environment, look around and actually "feel" it. VR at its best :)
