Fireworks Visualizer with Your Music [Demo]

Postby mharris » December 8th, 2013, 4:07 pm

Fireworks Visualizer to your own Music! Light In the Night.

Updated Demo: 6-26-2014

Ported the project to the iPhone and added Augmented reality. Its a free download. You pick a song on your iPod and it blasts the fireworks to the beat in the world using more augmented reality than virtual reality with the back camera as a view finder. The coolest part is you can capture your expierence and share your creations on social networks using the EveryPlay service.

I would love feedback.

Updated Demo: 12-17-2013

Based on tips and advise, I was going for experience. Download the latest client. Lay back and look up! High, Mid, Base now have their own emitter and the fireworks are now over one's head. If this is liked I think I am going to submit it to Share. Music Starts after 30 seconds.

Updated Demo: 12-14-2013

I started to polish the visuals. You are now on the tip of the cliff looking out into the ocean. You hear the sounds of nature as the sky gets dark. You see the spores in there air contrast against the night's sky and hear the first note. Cool thing about fireworks over water, is well fireworks over water, so check it out! I feel like I got a good size for scale in the demo! Headphones recommended.

This looks really neat! Can't wait to see more of it. I think one idea I would offer (unless you've already done it) is to optionally have the fireworks light up the landscape below a tiny bit, to give a similar effect of VR Cinema's screen lighting up the movie theater.

I was able to get Unity AssetStore "Visualizer Studio" made by Altered Reality into the Unity App so that the Fireworks are now controlled by the base/mid/treble of the song and not random timing. If its a base change the fireworks are low on the horizon, if its a mid change the fireworks are in the middle of the sky, and if its a high change the fireworks are way up in the sky. I take into account the timing of the rocket so it explodes on the beat.

Going to do some optimization/cleanup this week and make it so users can stream in their own MP3 and watch the show. Still planning that out. There is a class to stream audio in Unity's WWW class as long as I can dump that into an AudioSource we are good.

I hope to get a demo out soon.

I am going to share the Mac Demo in its current state.

I call it "Light In the Night" I am open to name changes ;)

http://bit.ly/18Fqp8j <-- Mac Only! (Original Demo, For Current Demo see Top Post)

The Day->Night transition will last about 90 seconds before the fireworks and song start.

The song is built inside the application. Working on specifying a mp3 in the root folder of the app to load your own mp3 in it to experience your own music.

I would love some feedback, experiences, and ideas to make this final.

Thanks again.

This is really good, I thought the original Tuscany demo was good but this is much better, I love how realistic the fir works are! The transition from night to day looked surreal on the rift! Keep up the good work! :D

I liked a lot the experience, before, during, and even after the fireworks, chasing the butterflies among the floating particules. The fireworks Illuminated very well the place. It was looking so real.
I don't know if it's my system at fault, but the speed of the fireworks was too high. Also, I'm dreaming of a VR fireworks engine that could reproduce hyperstereoscopic fireworks like this one.

Thanks for this app, I will demo it.

Amazing demo, the fireworks effect really works. If I can make a suggestion, can the fireworks be a bit further away from us? I think they're too big right now, like if they're launching 35 feet from us.

Anyway, congrats for the idea and execution! Really nice demo...

This is awesome. Definitely one of those things you can throw on for someone trying the Rift for the first time to make them instantly "get it."

Great demo! This was the first time out of hundreds of demos where I actually laid down on the floor for the experience. Excellent job on the lighting from the fireworks - that was spot on. Cool to see the old Tuscany house site rearranged and repurposed for something else.

I do have a few thoughts/suggestions, but not sure how easy they would be.

1. Once the song ends, the firework show should end as it's a little weird when it keeps going -- without the music it can get repetitive and I think you should yank the fireworks away from the player at the end of the song to keep the player wanting more.

2. I tried and tried but I could not tell if the fireworks were stereoscopic 3D. It was quite strange -- everything around me is in stereoscopic 3D but I couldn't tell if the fireworks were flat on a large 2D skybox/skysphere or if they were "actual" fireworks off in the distance.

3. I didn't really notice while I was watching the fireworks, but in afterthought I feel like they were too frenetic and fast paced. I'm not sure what exactly is tied to the music (frequency, speed, size/type of firework), but it might be nice to have the option to space the fireworks out a bit, and save the frenetic stuff for a finale or for the most intense parts of a song. Again, not sure how easy that would be. I'm thinking there must be plugins that can quickly pre-analyze a song to determine how its bpm/volume/intensity progresses, and maybe pinpoint the most intense part or something.

With such a fantastic premise, there's a big opportunity to really orchestrate an emotional impact on the player. I agree with welby that it almost made me wish I could sit next to a loved one to enjoy the experience. You've potentially made a nice counterargument to the whole "VR = end of relationships" thing. :)

Hope to see more!

This was beautiful! The song, fireworks... I was just standing there, marvel and enjoying the moment. It's moments like this, when I get really excited, where VR will take as in future.

The same as Drash, I kept wondering if Firework was 2d though? It did seem a bit flat, but I'm not sure if that was due low resolution?
For me fireworks did end once the song ended though.

This is awesome Matt! I love that they auto-sync with the song, nice addition. Would also love to see them in 3d, maybe with a dud every now and then that goes off too low to the ground and sparks fly onto the grass in front of you...
