hey folks,
its been almost 11 months since the last update, but there has been huge progress. I will work on posting some video and screenshots showing off some of the new features.

in the meantime, here is the latest and greatest prototype tech demo / gameplay test for 'The Deep' (v0.54):

notes:

Survive the open ocean. Submit to your greatest of fears.
This is a simple technical demo of a gameplay experience.

-- KEYBOARD CONTROLS --

W - forward
S - backward
A - strafe left
D - strafe right
SHIFT - sprint
E - pickup/inspect item
SPACE - jump
F - flashlight (toggle, if picked up)
R - drop orb
TAB - in game action menu

BTN 1 -fire weapon

BUILD NOTES (02/21/2015):

This build represents a huge update with every feature completely overhauled. However, it presents a very simple and focused gameplay experience, that is just a small part of the full idea.

Currently the environment and terrain is NOT procedurally generated.

basic premise:
- A sandbox survival and adventure game where the user must face the beauty and the danger of the ocean
- Surviving each day means they must conserve and replenish food, water, and stamina.
- They must scavenge their environment for food and equipment, all procedurally distributed
- Each day brings new driftwood which can yield life saving loot
- Encounter AI driven creatures, both docile and deadly
- Day and night cycles must be used to best advantage as light can be a very valuable resource
- an unpredictable weather system makes the environment even more threatening
- Losing sight of the boat can be the most dangerous situation of all

notes:
- higher res capture
- fixed rendering issues in the surface reflection
- updated flocking parameters for schools of fish
- smoothened out the day night cycle

I spent the better half of the last hour trying to find this game again (couldn't remember what it was called) and curious as to whether or not you are going to have anything to release soon?
I've been looking forwards to this one more than anything else from the jam!

yea, i wanted to clean up a few remaining issues before releasing the alpha to public. should have something out by the this monday (2nd).

Can't wait, trying it now!

Edit: Cool stuff doghell! The apprehension of being in the boat and wondering what lurks beneath is palpable for sure, I really like the big waves they look great, and a couple of times I seen shadows moving in the water which was good for a little bit of a scare.

The clouds render improperly in the Rift and are somewhat headache inducing, and it seems that when in the water there is a bit of a 'fisheye' effect that is somewhat disorienting and is slightly uncomfortable, and the mouse cursor gets in the way. Other than that it seems like a solid demo so far, definitely a good alpha; it has me optimistic for the future. :)

Keep up the good work, I can't wait for the next iteration! :)

yea, the clouds needs a bit of tweakage.
the mouse cursor should not show up if you click into the screen. where you running it fullscreen or window?

Really cool Idea for a game, survival games are all ways fun I spent many hours playing a gmod gamemode called stranded. The wave effect was really cool kinda made me want to go surfing. :)

I had a few bugs but that is to be expected, when I got to the bottom of the ocean the view would mess up in the right eye. It was really hard to see anything under the water at night not that you could see anything underwater at night in real life. When it did turn dark for some reason the skybox would mess up not sure how to explain it.

When I went to check out the ocean I totally lost track of my boat but that's my fault. :lol: like I said I really like the idea for this game and I hope you keep working on it. Are you planing on adding islands or is it going to take place on a boat? Either way keep up the good work I hope to see your ideas implemented into the game. Thanks for sharing!

Great job buddy! This version has seen much improvement over the last. :)

The only real issue I have is as the distortion of the underwater view. I will make the assumption that you are going for a more realistic kind of effect, but for the Rift the distortion just seems a little disorienting. IMO it would be better if it were left out.

Can't wait to see where this goes! :)
