Milk VR using any file local or stream: How To

Postby JonnyFlash » December 30th, 2014, 10:01 am

Welcome to my poorly written How To! :D

So after downloading a video I went searching for the location and found it to be in Android->Data->com.samsung.vrvideo

In there is a number of jpg previews, the full videos you have downloaded, and .json files for them. Make sure you have downloaded at least one video so you have a .json file to edit for your video. Copy the .json file and open in a text editor. In there the fields to change are rather obvious. If anyone needs specific guidance, feel free to ask, but you should be able to figure out what is what. You'll see you an set the path of the video file. While I have not tested putting the video file on my SD card and pointing the .json there, it will likely work.

What I have done so far is put both the .json file and the .mp4 video file with the same name in that folder and it payed beautifully! I didn't update the preview image link so it shows a different preview, but it looks to be able to use a local or web link for that, so you can set that to anything you want in the .json file ^_^

This will work with not only work with local files, but any mp4 with a direct web link! It's all in the .json file.

When I have a chance I'm going to look into it further. I'm hoping there is a setting that can be set in the .json file that allows for 180 videos as well as defining if it's a top bottom or left right stereo video. If someone gets to this first and finds something, please post!

In case you are wondering why you would go to this trouble instead of just using the 360 video player, try Milk. It's far better with full controls for the video playback.

UPDATE:

Confirmed commands so far:
"metadata": {"stereoscopic_type": "left-right"} - For Left Right Stereo 360 videos
"metadata": {"stereoscopic_type": "top-bottom"} - For Top Bottm Stereo 360 videos

Example .json data - Items in RED are what you enter the info for

Nothing yet. At the day job for a few more hours. I'll be toying with this all night after work, though :P

My best guess will be that if there is an option it will be something like {"stereoscopic_fov": 180} or something like that. Finding the actual string to use may be difficult, though. If anyone has foudn a video already in there that is 180, please provide the name of the video. The .json for that will have the info I need. Don't know if it even supports 180, though.

If you make 360 or 180 movies ( mono or stereo ) and want to try them out in MilkVR...email us at samsung.dtl@gmail.com. Easier ways than digging through the json ;).

Do you mean you can get user-created content into the MilkVR database so everybody can download and view it?

So I figured out some of the settings are completely ignored despite being there. For example, if you change the "local_url" and point it to a different video, it will still play the video of the matching filename. Also, it's not possible to point the video to a different file location. If there is not a matching mp4 video in the directory, it won't display the icon at all, even if there is a json file pointing to the directory with the video.

If someone else has figured out a way to store videos on the external SD card and have the json point to it correctly, let us know.

I'm pretty sure that's the point of MilkVR. They did say they were going for the "YouTube" of the VR video world. My best guess is that during the initial stages they are not having it where anyone can quickly upload a video to it. I'm guessing this is to make sure the right kind of content appears on it while there aren't initially many videos up there.
